DEATHS LINKED TO STATIN DRUGS
Cholesterol-lowering drugs are under the spotlight in the UK, with some commentators calling for a complete safety review of the commonly-used heart pills. British Government figures released last week show that 92 deaths have been linked to statins. The death toll could actually be much higher because doctors are reluctant to blame drugs they prescribe for harming patients.
More than 37 of the deaths were attributed to Merck's simvastatin which is now being sold over the counter under the brand name Zocor. Lipitor, made by Pfizer, was associated with 36 of the deaths.
Three other leading statin brands--Novartis's Lescol, BMS's Lipostat and AstraZeneca's Crestor--have been associated with 19 deaths since they were introduced in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
As well as the deaths there have also been reports of 7,000 side effects reported to the Department of Health by doctors, including kidney and liver damage and muscle weakness.

The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics |
|
... The International Network of Cholesterol Skeptics (THINCS) is a steadily growing group of scientists, physicians, other academicians and science writers from various countries. Members of this group represent different views about the causation of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, some of them are in conflict with others, but this is a normal part of science. What we all oppose is that animal fat and high cholesterol play a role. The aim with this website is to inform our colleagues and the public that this idea is not supported by scientific evidence; in fact, for many years a huge number of scientific studies have directly contradicted it.
Is the benefit of statins overstated? Some of the studies claiming to show benefit may be overstated. Nice collection of articles and observations that do not conform to the popular acceptance of statins as being a great medicine.
